Global Tiger Day is commemorated every 29th of July to raise awareness about tiger conservation worldwide. Indonesia was one of the countries that initiated the first Global Tiger Day celebration in 2010, along with 12 other countries: Russia, India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos.
Sumatran Tiger Conservation
Indonesia, as one of the countries with the highest number of tiger habitats, has approximately 2.5 million hectares of tropical rainforest on the island of Sumatra. This includes three national parks in Sumatra: Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Gunung Leuser National Park, and Kerinci Seblat National Park.
One of the tiger conservation areas in Sumatra is Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation (TWNC). TWNC is a 48,153-hectare conservation area that serves as a natural habitat for wildlife living both on land and in the sea. TWNC is located in a remote region with no public transportation available to the West Pesisir district at the southern tip of Sumatra Island, which is part of Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (TNBBS).
Since 1996, TWNC has been managed by Yayasan Artha Graha Peduli (AGP) as part of Artha Graha Group/Artha Graha Network's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in the environmental sector. One of the critically endangered wildlife species in Indonesia that resides in TWNC is the Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae).
According to Antara News, the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, stated that it is currently estimated that there are still more than a thousand Sumatran Tigers living in various forests and other locations on Sumatra Island. This data comes from the Sumatera Wide Tiger Survey (SWTS) conducted across 23 landscapes in Sumatra from 2018 to 2023.
